Futhi Mtoba, Partner and Chairwoman, Deloitte & Touche South Africa
Futhi is currently Chairwoman of the Board of Deloitte & Touche South Africa. Futhi joined Deloitte South Africa in 1988 and later became the first black woman to be appointed to the Board. Futhi previously served as Director and Chair of the Investment Committee of the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) with assets under management of R400 billion ($60 billion USD). She was honored as "2004 Business Woman of the Year" by the Businesswomen’s Association and Nedbank.
Osaze Osifo, CEO, Travant Capital
Osaze Osifo is a co-founder and the Chief Executive Officer of Travant Capital Partners, an alternative investments firm focused on the West and Central African markets. Mr. Osifo is the former Chief Executive Officer of Ocean and Oil Holdings. Mr. Osifo has served and currently serves on the Board of Directors of a number of companies in the energy, real estate and finance sectors. He is also a member of the Africa Regional Advisory Board of the London Business School.
Nonkqubela Mazwai, Managing Director, Motjoli Resources
Nonkqubela Mazwai is Managing Director of Motjoli Resources. She has served on the Boards of Lafarge Mining, Central Energy Fund, Strategic Fuel Fund, the South African Mining Development Association, and CIDA Empowerment Trust. She has also worked with the South African government to implement mining legislation.
Dr. James Mwangi, Chief Executive Officer, Equity Bank
Dr. James Mwangi is Managing Director and Chief Executive of Equity Bank, one of the leading banks in East Africa. Under his leadership, Equity Bank transformed from a technically insolvent building society to the leading microfinance bank in Africa. It has since converted into a fully regulated, publicly listed commercial bank and home to 42% of all bank accounts in Kenya. He has served on the UN Advisory Group on Inclusive Financial Systems and is an advisor to the United Nations Environmental Program. In June 2007, Dr. Mwangi received the 2007 Global Vision Award in microfinance, alongside Nobel Peace Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus in recognition of microfinance as one of the “concepts of the future” that will change the world economy.
Tunde Folawiyo, Group Executive Director, The Yinka Folawiyo Group
Tijani Babatunde Folawiyo is an acclaimed Nigerian industrialist who leads the Yinka Folawiyo Group, which has petroleum exploration and power generation operations in Nigeria. He was instrumental in pioneering developmental activities in the Benin Embayment, and he is currently the Vice-President of Nigeria Association of Indigenous Petroleum Explorers and Productions (NAIPEC). He is a director of MTN Communications and Access Bank Plc in Nigeria. He is a graduate of the London School of Economics with a B.Sc. specialization in Industry and Trade and an LLB degree. He also holds an LLM degree from University College, London.
Nomsa Daniels, Partner, SRM Holdings
Nomsa is a partner in SRM Holdings, a black economic empowerment investment firm focusing on technology ventures in South Africa. Nomsa was previously involved in the anti-Apartheid struggle while she lived in exile in the United States.
Eric Wright, Partner, Africa Venture Partners
Eric has extensive experience in venture capital, private equity, M&A, corporate finance, capital markets and leveraged buyouts in Africa and the USA. He was previously the head of private equity and venture capital for Citigroup in South Africa. Eric has been involved in cross-boarder corporate finance and capital markets transactions totaling approximately $1 billion for African issuers.
Jon Cummings, Director, McKinsey & Company
Jon is a Director at McKinsey & Company and has been with the Firm since 1987. Jon began his career in Chicago and was in South Africa from 1994 to 2002, where he co-founded the Johannesburg Office and was the Office Manager for seven years. Jon currently is the leader of McKinsey’s Americas Packaged Goods practice and is based in New Jersey. Prior to joining McKinsey, Jon received his BA from Yale University in the U.S. and a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics in the U.K.

Derek Schrier, Chairman, African Leadership Foundation
Derek is formerly a Managing Member of Farallon Capital Management, LLC, a private investment firm based in San Francisco. Prior to joining Farallon, Derek worked at Goldman Sachs & Company in the mergers and acquisitions department. He also managed the elections research and polling for the African National Congress’s political campaign during South Africa’s first-ever democratic elections in 1994. Derek has a J.D. and M.B.A. from Stanford University and an A.B. from Princeton University.
Acha Leke, Partner, McKinsey and Company
Acha, a native of Cameroon, is a Partner of McKinsey & Company and a Co-Founder of ALA. He is based out of McKinsey’s Johannesburg office, where he has served a broad range of clients across Africa. This work has taken Acha to South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Botswana, among others. Acha has a PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
Peter Mombaur, Founder, MombaurMcCabe Consulting
Peter is a Partner in Africa Holdings, E. Oppenheimer’s private equity business in Africa. Peter has spent most of his professional life in Africa. He has been based in Nigeria for seven years, where he initially worked as an independent consultant in the retail banking, telecoms and FMCG sectors. Peter also served as the CEO of Emperion West Africa, a data telecommunications company providing Corporate VSAT and FWA solutions. Prior to this work, Peter was an Engagement Manager for McKinsey & Company, where he did project work in Europe, East-, West- and Southern Africa. Peter is also a founding partner of Lagos-based financial advisory and management consulting firm MombaurMcCabe, where he now acts as a non-executive Director.
Fred Swaniker, Founder and President, African Leadership Academy
Fred has a proven track record as an entrepreneur and brings the experience of launching and managing private educational institutions of excellence, including Mount Pleasant English Medium School in Botswana and Global Leadership Adventures. Fred previously worked as a consultant for McKinsey and Company and as the founding Chief Operating Officer of Synexa Life Sciences.
Chris Khaemba, Inaugural Dean, African Leadership Academy
Chris was previously Principal of Alliance Boys’ High School in Kenya, the highest performing school on Kenya’s secondary school examinations. A former military officer and physics teacher, Chris has served as a school leader for 12 years. Chris has received the Distinguished Service Medal from the President of Kenya for his excellence as a Principal and was named one of the “100 most influential Kenyans” in 2007. Chris holds diplomas from the Kenya Science Teachers’ Training College and the Military Defence College, and he has an MBA from the Kenyatta University School of Business.

Hakeem Belo-Osagie, Chairman of Etisalat Nigeria
Mr. Belo-Osagie is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Emerging Markets Telecommunication Limited (operating under the Etisalat brand) in Nigeria. He is also the Chairman of the Abuja Investment Company and a director of Timbuktu Media. He served until 2004 as the Chairman of the United Bank for Africa Plc, one of the largest commercial banks in Nigeria. Mr. Belo-Osagie was also the founder and first Chairman of First Securities Discount House, which is Nigeria’s leading money markets and treasury bill trading firm.
Carly Fiorina, Former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hewlett-Packard
Mrs. Fiorina was Chief Executive Officer of Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) from 1999 to 2005. Before joining Hewlett-Packard, Carly spent 22 years in leadership positions at AT&T and Lucent Technologies. She sits on the boards of Taiwan Semiconductor and Revolution Health, serves as a trustee for MIT, and is a board member of several leading non-profit organizations.
Dr. Khalid Al-Mansour, Senior Advisor, HRH Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal
Dr. Al-Mansour is an international attorney and businessman and is renowned as an intellectual, activist, author, and teacher. He co-founded the law firm of Al-Waleed, Al-Talal, and Al-Mansour and has served as a director of the Saudi African Bank and the United Bank of Africa among others.
Sir Sam Jonah, President (Retired), Anglogold Ashanti PLC, South Africa
Sir Sam is the non-executive President of Anglogold Ashanti, where he transformed Ashanti Goldfields from a one-mine operation into the world’s second-largest gold producer. He is the Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Ghana and a Visiting Professor of Business at the University of Witswatersrand.
Temba Maqubela, Dean of Faculty, Phillips Academy Andover, USA
Temba is Dean of Faculty at Andover, one of the USA’s most prestigious secondary schools. He joined the faculty in 1987 as a refugee of the anti-apartheid struggle and later became Chairman of the Chemistry Department and Director of (MS)2, Andover’s summer math and science program for minority students.
Margaret Nkrumah, Founding Principal, SOS-HGIC International School, Ghana
Margaret was the Founding Principal of SOS Hermann Gmeiner International College, which takes talented orphaned and abandoned children from across the African continent. SOS-HGIC is acknowledged as the most successful school in Ghana and places its graduates in leading global universities. Margaret also serves on the Boards of the International Baccalaureate Organization and the International Schools Association.
Isaac Shongwe, Executive Director, Barloworld Ltd, South Africa
Isaac was recently elected as the first black Executive Director of Barloworld, one of the largest listed companies in South Africa. A Rhodes Scholar and Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute, Isaac is also a founding member of the African Leadership Initiative and is its Chairman in South Africa.
Dr. Ralph Townsend, Headmaster, Winchester College, UK
Ralph is the head of Winchester College, one of the premiere independent schools in England. He was previously headmaster of Oundle School, the largest coeducational boarding school in the UK, and Sydney Grammar School in Australia. He has also served in the Theology Faculty at Oxford and as Head of English at Eton College.

Chris Bradford is the founding President of the Foundation and Co-Founder and Executive Vice President at African Leadership Academy. Chris previously worked in brand management with the Procter and Gamble Company, as a teaching fellow at Oundle School in the UK, and as a Consultant with the Boston Consulting Group. He has a BA from Yale University and an MBA and MA in Education from Stanford University.
Ed Brakeman, Secretary & Treasurer; Managing Director, Bain Capital
Ed Brakeman joined Bain Capital in 1988 with an initial focus on private equity investments. Beginning in 1996, Ed was a co-founder and co-head of Bain Capital’s public equity investment business, Brookside Capital. He retired from his full-time responsibilities as a Managing Director in 2005. Today, he continues to participate in several firm initiatives on a part-time basis. He and his wife, Amy, are engaged in other education and youth development initiatives in Africa including the Kliptown Youth Program. Ed has an MBA from Stanford University and a BS from the University of California at Berkeley.
Alex Cummings, Director; Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of the Coca-Cola Company
Alex Cummings joined The Coca-Cola Company in 1997 as Regional Manager, Nigeria. In the 13 years he’s been with the company, Alex has served as the President of Coca Cola’s North and West Africa division as well as the President and COO of the Africa group, responsible for all operations in Africa. Alex was born in Liberia, West Africa and has previously served on the Advisory Board of The African Presidential Archives & Research Center, The Corporate Council on Africa, The African-America Institute, and The Center for Global Development's Commission on U.S. Policy toward Low-Income Poorly Performing States (LIPPS). Alex holds a B.S. degree in Finance and Economics from Northern Illinois University and an MBA in Finance from Atlanta University.

Ted Dintersmith, Partner Emeritus, Charles River Ventures
Ted Dintersmith has more than twenty-three years of experience in early-stage venture investing, focusing on software and information services companies. He is a former board member of the National Venture Capital Association, chairing the organization’s public policy committee. For the entirety of the campaign, he was a member of President Obama’s National Finance Committee. Ted earned a PhD in Engineering from Stanford University and his undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary. He and his family now reside in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Temp Keller, Managing Director, Innovations for Learning
Temp Keller is the Managing Director of Innovations for Learning, a nonprofit organization that develops innovative technology to improve early elementary education. Temp is also the Founder, Chairman, and former President of RISE (Resources for Indispensable Schools and Educators), a non-profit organization that works with more than 120 schools and 2,000 teachers over 6 regions to retain effective teachers serving in low-income communities. RISE was founded in 2000, and awarded the Ashoka Fellowship in 2004. Temp has a lifelong passion for Africa and previously served on the Board of Princeton in Africa. Temp has a BA in Politics from Princeton University and an MBA from The University of Chicago.
Joan Lonergan, Head of the Hewitt School
Joan Lonergan was the head of Castilleja, one of the most highly regarded schools for girls in the United States, for seventeen years. In 2009, she served on the NAIS Technology Task Force and is a director on the board of KIPP Bay Area Schools. Joan has taught mathematics in public and parochial schools, was a teacher, dorm master, administrator and Director of the Advanced Studies program at St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire and, was elected to three consecutive terms on the only fiscally autonomous public school board in New Hampshire. She co-founded and taught at Project Second Start in New Hampshire and has served as a director of the National Coalition of Girls Schools, St. Matthew’s School in California, and the Harvard University Alumni Association. Upon her retirement from Castilleja in June, 2010, Joan became the Head of School at The Hewitt School, in New York City, a girls, k-12 independent school.

As President of Amherst College, Tony has focused on realizing Amherst’s aim to be both the most selective and the most diverse liberal arts college, ensuring access for the most talented students of any economic background. Marx previously served for 13 years on the faculty at Columbia University where his academic work focused on South Africa. In the 1980s he participated in the anti-apartheid movement and helped found Khanya College in South Africa. He also serves on the Board of Teach for America.
